Former Vice President Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, have added a Montecito-area property to their real estate holdings, reports the Montecito Journal.

The couple spent $8,875,000 on an ocean-view villa on 1.5 acres with a swimming pool, spa and fountains, a real estate source familiar with the deal confirms. The Italian-style house has six fireplaces, five bedrooms and nine bathrooms.

As Powers points out, even the Short Bus Crowd over at DuH (aka Democrat Underground) are spitting some nails Gore’s way.

The Obama administration is proposing to open vast expanses of water along the Atlantic coastline, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the north coast of Alaska to oil and natural gas drilling, much of it for the first time, officials said Tuesday.

The proposal — a compromise that will please oil companies and domestic drilling advocates but anger some residents of affected states and many environmental organizations — would end a longstanding moratorium on oil exploration along the East Coast from the northern tip of Delaware to the central coast of Florida, covering 167 million acres of ocean.

Sounds good on paper? Hardly.

“One major flashpoint in the negotiations has been whether to share drilling revenue with states and to allow states to opt in or out of drilling along their coastlines. It was unclear late Tuesday whether Obama endorses revenue-sharing for states. “It appears the Northern Atlantic and entire Pacific Coast will now be under a de facto ban” for drilling, said Patrick Creighton, a spokesman for the Institute for Energy Research. Even if drilling is ultimately allowed in part of the Atlantic, Creighton said, revenue sharing is an essential incentive for states. The administration’s plans could meet resistance from at least 10 Senate Democrats representing coastal and Great Lakes states who last week raised concerns about “unfettered access to oil and gas drilling” that could jeopardize fishing, tourism and military exercises. The Interior Department retooled the current schedule of offshore leases governing 2007 through 2012 after a federal appeals court last April ruled that the second Bush administration had not done a sufficient environmental review of expanded drilling off the Alaskan coast.

This “drilling proposal” is full of gotchas, half-measures and frauds.

More than a year into his presidency and after imposing numerous delays on American energy production, President Obama announced today that he would open up portions of the Outer Continental Shelf to offshore drilling.

But the plan is defined more by what it restricts than what it opens up. The Obama administration chose to take off the table large portions of the OCS in an announcement that was supposed to be about expanding American energy.

The new plan includes:

* No drilling in the Pacific Ocean.
* No drilling in a large portion of the Atlantic Ocean.
* No drilling in some of the most promising areas of the Gulf of Mexico.
* No drilling in much of Alaska.

While opening up any portion of the OCS for responsible energy development appears to be a great step forward, the truth is that none of this has been finalized, and most new drilling will not occur until after 2012 at the earliest.

The offering also comes with a hefty price: President Obama wants to force Americans to swallow a massive new energy tax before any state will reap the benefits from this new offshore drilling. The bill Mr. Obama urged Congress to pass last summer, the Waxman-Markey energy tax, would eviscerate the economy, killing more than one million jobs per year while raising the cost of energy for all Americans.

If an energy tax passes Congress this year, the negative impact on the economy will happen long before the first oil comes from these new offshore leases.

In addition, the multitude of steps to be taken before any of these lease sales are made after 2012 are still a work in progress. Each offshore tract that the administration proposes will no doubt fall victim to an array of court challenges and bureaucratic hangups, each of which will push back new offshore drilling even further.

The end result? This will not produce a drop of new oil anytime in the near future. It will however, fatten the already bloated pockets of the legal wing of such Enviromarxist groups like the Sierra Club, the WWF and whatever other tree-dwelling monkeys can be found in the local forest that can gin up a little money to issue endless court challenges and “environmental impact statements”.

On the other hand, The President treats his donors and puppetmasters very generously when it comes to their energy and profit efforts.

Well, as I have said before, Crap and Steal was nothing more than a head fake, a bill to give legitimacy and authority for an ideology that hides behind many junk science skirts in order to impose a Stalinist-like state.

After maybe the worst SCOTUS decision this side of Roe, the 2004 decision that declared carbon dioxide a “pollutant”, the EnviroMarxist® Movement had the weapon that they had been so desperately seeking since the birth of their cause in the early 1960′s. (led by Mass Genocidist Rachel Carson). With that decision, the EPA now had virtual carte blanche when it comes to policy-making, regulation enforcement and lack of accountability to either.

However, as with most things Left, policy did not just rush forth all at once. The usual stealth was used on the policy level. Annoying but not earth-shattering dictates that would cause a massive collapse of an economy of even a major sector of same. No, it was more like dictating such things as what fuel a car’s AC unit could use, or putting out phony data on such pet projects like asbestos, radon and mold and using their regulatory muscle to see that their authority was followed.

Well, with a Photoshopped President with a Marxist bent to boot now squatting in the White House, those days of turtle-like tenacity have come to and, replaced with a batch of rabbits on cocaine.

Administration Warns of ‘Command-and-Control’ Regulation Over Emissions

The Obama administration is warning Congress that if it doesn’t move to regulate greenhouse gases, the Environmental Protection Agency will take a “command-and-control” role over the process in a way that could hurt business.

The warning, from a top White House economic official who spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity, came on the eve of EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson’s address to the international conference on climate change in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Jackson, however, tried to strike a tone of cooperation in her address Wednesday, explaining that the EPA’s new powers to regulate greenhouse gases will be used to complement legislation pending in Congress, not replace it.

“This is not an ‘either-or’ moment. It’s a ‘both-and’ moment,” she said.

But while administration officials have long said they prefer Congress take action on climate change, the economic official who spoke with reporters Tuesday night made clear that the EPA will not wait and is prepared to act on its own.

And it won’t be pretty.

“If you don’t pass this legislation, then … the EPA is going to have to regulate in this area,” the official said. “And it is not going to be able to regulate on a market-based way, so it’s going to have to regulate in a command-and-control way, which will probably generate even more uncertainty.”

No, it will not be pretty at all. Not for the millions of Americans that work in the energy industry who stand to lose their jobs, those who rely on it most (think truck drivers) and of course, the consumer, who will see energy rates skyrocket (to use Obama’s own word) while suffering brownouts and eventually blackouts, ala Bucharest under Ceaucescu or Iraq under Saddam. The entire energy industry, from coal to nuclear to oil as well as other hardcore industries like steel are facing the prospect a literal shutdown or at the very least, a massive downsizing the likes of which this country has never seen before.

Eastman Announces Discontinuation of Beaumont, Texas, Industrial Gasification Project

KINGSPORT, Tenn., Dec. 9, 2009 – Eastman Chemical Company announced today that it has decided to discontinue its Beaumont, Texas, industrial gasification project. This decision was made due to a number of factors, including high capital costs, the current and foreseen reduced spread between natural gas and oil and petroleum coke prices, and continued uncertainty regarding U.S. energy and environmental public policy. As a result of this decision, the company will recognize a pre-tax non-cash asset impairment charge estimated to be between $150 million-$180 million in the fourth quarter 2009.

“Even though it is no longer advantageous for Eastman to pursue this project, we will continue to explore global industrial gasification opportunities as a long-term growth option for the company,” said Jim Rogers, president and CEO.

Rogers added, “Eastman is committed to being an outperforming chemical company. I am confident we will deliver profitable growth through the combination of our solid core businesses and strong financial profile.”

Global industrial gasification. In other words, they, as Taz over at FC mentions:

I spoke with several plant managers here locally and they told me if Cap and Trade passes they will close their doors and move offshore. And these are major Refineries not little unknown plants. This administration is deliberately destroying America, and the idiot democrats in Congress are complicit in this lunacy.

And with Obama, EPA Director Jackson and their Criminal Carbon-trading Crooks over in Copenhagen, The EnviroMarxist’s Wet Dream is about to be realized.

Municipalities across Canada should consider swapping herbicides for goat herds to control weeds on environmentally sensitive lands, a British Columbia study has concluded.

The study, led by University of Northern British Columbia professor Annie Booth, tracked the eating habits of goats for two summers in Prince George. The study found the goats effectively cleared properties of hearty weeds including thistle, hawk weed, dandelion and horsetails.

“As soon as we unloaded them, they turned around and started eating dandelions,” Booth said. “They do their job — which is clear up and clean out the weeds here.”

“We were very pleased to discover that goats do provide a very effective form of weed control, particularly for some tricky weeds that are difficult to eradicate even with the use of herbicides.”
