Just One More: Final PPP Poll Shows Brown Ahead By 5

Posted by NosferatusCoffin | January 18th, 2010

And to top off the night, one more poll that give Brown a solid lead.

From PPP: (Hat Tip: Legal Insurrection)

Scott Brown leads Martha Coakley 51-46 in our final Massachusetts Senate poll, an advantage that is within the margin of error for the poll.

Over the last week Brown has continued his dominance with independents and increased his ability to win over Obama voters as Coakley’s favorability numbers have declined into negative territory. At the same time Democratic leaning voters have started to take more interest in the election, a trend that if it continues in the final 36 hours of the campaign could put her over the finish line.

Here’s what we found:

-Brown is up 64-32 with independents and is winning 20% of the vote from people who supported Barack Obama in 2008 while Coakley is getting just 4% of the McCain vote.

-Brown’s voters continue to be much more enthusiastic than Coakley’s. 80% of his say they’re ‘very excited’ about voting Tuesday while only 60% of hers express that sentiment. But the likely electorate now reports having voted for Barack Obama by 19 points, up from 16 a week ago, and a much smaller drop from his 26 point victory in the state than was seen in Virginia.

-Those planning to turn out continue to be skeptical of the Democratic health care plan, saying they oppose it by a 48/40 margin.

-Coakley’s favorability dropped from 50% to 44% after a week filled with perceived missteps. Brown’s negatives went up a lot but his positives only actually went from 57% to 56%, an indication that attacks against him may have been most effective with voters already planning to support Coakley but ambivalent toward Brown.

Full PDF of the poll is here.

Cook Gives Brown Advantage; Obama Insiders Throwing in Towel?

Posted by NosferatusCoffin | January 17th, 2010

Even Charlie Cook is giving the edge to Brown. Considering Cook has long had a liberal bent when it comes to calling races, this is petty significant.

From Newsmax:

“This past Thursday, Jan. 14, The Cook Political Report moved the open Massachusetts Senate seat rating from lean Democrat to toss-up, having moved it from solid Democrat to lean Democratic on Jan. 7,” Cook wrote, Politico first reported. “We continue to see this race as very much of a toss-up, with Republican state Sen. Scott Brown holding onto a very narrow, single-digit lead over Democratic state Attorney General Martha Coakley.

“Given the vagaries of voter turnout, particularly in lower participation level special elections, this race could still go either way, but we put a finger on the scale for Brown. Last-minute Democratic attacks on Brown have driven his negatives up some and slightly diminished the incredible intensity of support that Brown enjoyed, but it looks more likely than not to hold.”

One bone to pick. Since when is a “single digit lead” “very narrow”. Especially considering most every poll, internal or not, for the most part shows a 4-9 point Brown lead? And even more so, Coakley never gets to 50% in any of them. That is Political Doom 101.

Meanwhile, CNN is reporting that White House insiders are ready to throw in the towel:

From CNN: (Hat Tip: Director Blue)

Multiple advisers to President Obama have privately told party officials that they believe Democrat Martha Coakley is going to lose Tuesday’s special election to fill the Massachusetts Senate seat held by the late Ted Kennedy for more than 40 years, several Democratic sources told CNN Sunday.

The sources added that the advisers are still hopeful that Obama’s visit to Massachusetts on Sunday – coupled with a late push by Democratic activists – could help Coakley pull out a narrow victory in an increasingly tight race against Republican state Sen. Scott Brown.

However, the presidential advisers have grown increasingly pessimistic in the last three days about Coakley’s chances after a series of missteps by the candidate, sources said.

That iceberg is coming up fast, Dems.

And It Gets Worse: Brown has 9.6% Lead in New Poll

Posted by NosferatusCoffin | January 17th, 2010

42% support for Coakley and over 50% for Brown. I would say that if the polls are even halfway right, this going to be a cakewalk for Brown, as I have expected for the last few days.

Meanwhile, the bottom just keeps deeper and deeper for Coakley, the Kennedys and Obama. I would be watching the tops of tall buildings come Tuesday. It might be raining Democrats.

From Inside Meford.com (Hat Tip: Before it’s News)

Brown supporters focused most on pocketbook issues, Coakley supporters on healthcare reform, undecided voters split

A poll conducted by the Merriman River Group (MRG) and InsideMedford.com indicates that Scott Brown leads Martha Coakley 50.8% – 41.2% in the contest to fill the seat of the late Senator Ted Kennedy. Liberty Party candidate Joe Kennedy pulls in just 1.8% support, while 6.2% of voters are still not sure. Brown and Coakley both have most of their supporters locked in. 98% of both candidate’s supporters say they are definitely or probably going to vote for their candidate. In contrast, 22% of Kennedy’s supporters are just leaning toward him, suggesting that Brown and Coakley may both want to take aim at swaying those voters.

Results in PDF format here.

The real key is getting Brown seated ASAP and crushing any illegal attempts by Reid and Co. to block that.

GOP Lawyers: Sen. Paul Kirk Cannot Vote After MA Election

Posted by NosferatusCoffin | January 17th, 2010

A most interesting point made by the Weekly Standard. According to Massachusetts law, interim Sen. Paul Kirk will not be eligible to vote in the U.S. Senate after Tuesday.

From the article: (Hat Tip; Gateway Pundit)

But in the days after the election, it is Kirk’s status that matters, not Brown’s. Massachusetts law says that an appointed senator remains in office “until election and qualification of the person duly elected to fill the vacancy.” The vacancy occurred when Senator Edward Kennedy died in August. Kirk was picked as interim senator by Governor Deval Patrick.

Democrats in Massachusetts have talked about delaying Brown’s “certification,” should he defeat Democrat Martha Coakley on Tuesday. Their aim would be to allow Kirk to remain in the Senate and vote the health care bill.

But based on Massachusetts law, Senate precedent, and the U.S. Constitution, Republican attorneys said Kirk will no longer be a senator after election day, period. Brown meets the age, citizenship, and residency requirements in the Constitution to qualify for the Senate. “Qualification” does not require state “certification,” the lawyers said.

Granted, with a mentally ill Senate Majority Leader, a sleazy Kennedy Machine in MA and the Democrats utter contempt for any type of rules that hamper their agenda, anything is possible.

Guv Luv: Gov. Patterson Spotted with ‘Mystery Woman’

Posted by NosferatusCoffin | January 17th, 2010

I am not much for gossip of any type, but this is a juicy little piece of steak:

From the NY Post: (Hat Tip: Free Conservatives)

Gov. Paterson was spotted nuzzling, neck-kissing and cooing like a smitten schoolboy with a pretty young woman — not his wife — in a New Jersey steakhouse yesterday afternoon, The Post has learned.

“I saw him kissing her neck,” said Sharon Farrell, a lawyer sitting two tables away from Paterson and his mystery gal pal at the River Palm Terrace in Edgewater. “He was right on her neck, nudging, like back and forth.”

Do you know the mystery woman? Email the Post at webeditor@nypost.com!

Paterson’s spokeswoman later said the governor’s dining partner was just a friend, and that he never got romantic with her.

The governor himself told The Post that the woman “works with me.”

But Farrell said, “No way it was a business meeting . . . It was very intimate.”

Farrell’s friend and dining companion, special-ed teacher Carol McGuirt, said Paterson and his lady friend, a leggy Latina in her 20s, were ensconced in a cozy, curved banquette for several hours during lunch, and clearly were enjoying each other’s company — immensely.

It also looks like this place is a Steakhouse of Ill Repute:

Coincidentally, or not, the same steakhouse has been frequented by Eliot Spitzer — whose 2008 resignation as governor after being exposed as a prostitute-loving horn-dog put Paterson in charge of the Empire State.

No word on whether Chris Dodd or Ted Kennedy’s ghost were in the backroom with any of the waitresses.

D’OH! Islamic Solidarity Cancelled Games Over “Persian Gulf” Logo

Posted by NosferatusCoffin | January 17th, 2010

You cannot make this stuff up…

From the UK Telegraph: (Hat Tip: Free Conservatives)

Islamic games cancelled in Arab-Iran row over Persian Gulf name

The Islamic Solidarity Games, designed to strengthen ties among Muslim nations, have been cancelled after a dispute between Arab countries and Iran over the name of the waterway dividing them.

The Saudi-based Islamic Solidarity Games Federation says they cancelled the sporting event, which were meant to be held in Tehran in the spring, after Iran put “Persian Gulf” on the logo.

Arabs call the waterway the Arabian Gulf and many were offended by references to its other common name.

I suppose it could have been worse. They could have put ImInAJihad’s face on that logo.
