Portman looks to succeed Voinovich in Ohio

Posted by NosferatusCoffin | January 14th, 2009

Amerpundit is reporting that former Republican representative Rob Portman will run to succeed Sen. George Voinovich (R) in Ohio, Republican sources have told Politico.

From the article:

Portman’s official announcement is expected to take place on Wednesday.

Portman would give Senate Republicans an accomplished candidate who is likely to clear the primary field.

“He’s great on both policy and politics, and you don’t often find that combination,” said Hamilton County Republican party chairman Alex Triantafilou. “His experience in government, his experience in Washington and his understanding of Ohio would make him a tremendous force in the Senate.”

Portman, while not not most rock-ribbed conservative out there, would most likely be a major improvement over Voinovich who has spent the last few years overexercising his tear ducts and pretty much playing rug to the Dem’s feet when it comes to both policy and actually standing up for the people who voted him in. You also might remember that Portman was one name that was tossed around last Spring/Summer to be McCain’s running mate.

Portman reportedly has around $1.5 million left in his House campaign committee fund, which can be transferred and used for his Senate run, so initial seed money needed for the race is already there. This is one to keep an eye on, seeing that the mid-terms at this point probably favor the Dems a little more than the GOP at this point.

Paglia: Couric ‘Definitively the Stupidest’ Journalist

Posted by NosferatusCoffin | January 14th, 2009

A great little piece from NewsBusters. Camille Paglia, that cigar-smoking, take-no-prisoners true feminist calls the Perky One, ‘Definitively the Stupidest’ Journalist’. While this is hardly news, it is good to see it aired by a well-known figure such as Ms. Paglia and (rather suprisingly) being posted on the Salon.com site. Normally, Salon is reserved for the chardonnay and brie-eating crowd who spend more time choosing between renting “Yentl” or “Sicko” from NetFlix then most of us do raking leaves on a windy, October day.

From her Salon.com article:

As I have repeatedly said in this column, I have never had the slightest problem in understanding Sarah Palin’s meaning at any time. On the contrary, I have positively enjoyed her fresh, natural, rapid delivery with its syncopated stops and slides — a fabulous example of which was the way (in her recent interview with John Ziegler) that she used a soft, swooping satiric undertone to zing Katie Couric’s dippy narcissism and to assert her own outrage as a “mama grizzly” at libels against her family.

Ideology-driven attacks on Palin became clotted liberal clichés within 24 hours of her introduction as John McCain’s running mate. What a bunch of tittering lemmings the urban elite have become in this country. From Couric’s vicious manipulations of video clips to [Dick] Cavett’s bourgeois platitudes, the preemptive strike on Palin as a potential presidential candidate has grossly misfired. Whatever legitimate objections may be raised to Palin on political grounds (explored, for example, by David Talbot in Salon) have been lost in the amoral overkill that has defamed a self-made woman of concrete achievement in the public realm.

She also weighed in on the Censorship Doctrine, GoreBullshit Warming and other subjects. Certainly worth a read as she is one of the more unique commentators out here, even if I disagree with her on a fair amount of issues. but I have always enjoyed her down-to-earth style.

Hope: FrankenFraud Flummoxed

Posted by NosferatusCoffin | January 12th, 2009

Well, I suppose we should be thankful for small miracles in this season of insanity. No matter how small.

Wannabe-Sen. Underpants (no, the image to the left is not doctored) was rebuffed today in his attempt to receive his certificate and be seated in the U.S. Senate. Since the final phase of this highly contested Senate election, that being the lawsuits that the Coleman campaign are in the process of filing have yet to be completed, Underpants will have to wait with the rest of us and see if this modern “Obama math” holds up his theft of this election.

From NewsMax:

Democrat Al Franken asked the Minnesota governor and secretary of state to issue an election certificate that would let him take office in the Senate, but the request was denied.

“Minnesota law is very clear on when a certificate of election can be issued,” Mark Ritchie, Minnesota’s Democratic secretary of state, wrote in a Monday statement. “Neither the governor nor I may sign a certificate of election in the U.S. Senate race until all election contests have reached a final determination. Even if the governor issues a certificate of election prior to the conclusion of the contest phase, I will not sign it.”

Minn. Governor Pawlenty echoed Ritchie, saying the following in a statement: “I have a duty to follow state law and our statutes are clear on this issue. I am prohibited from issuing a certificate of election until the election contest in the courts has been resolved.”

Powerline, who has been following this circus since Day One adds:

So why did Franken bother? Many people don’t realize that under Minnesota law, post-election proceedings take place in three stages. Two of those stages, canvassing and recount, are complete, while the third, the election contest, is just beginning. Several important issues that will result in Norm Coleman gaining votes have not yet been addressed in either of the first two phases. I suspect that Franken is trying to don the mantle of inevitability on the theory that the more people think he is destined to win, the more likely he is to do so.

And also judging the image to the left, he will join Sens. Byrd and Leaky Leahy in the Depends Club, whose membership has caused the Senate janitorial staff to ask for a hefty raise. (Gives a whole new meaning to the term “bailout”).

Network Ninnies at NBC banning Ann?

Posted by NosferatusCoffin | January 6th, 2009

Well, it seems that that the big-wigs over at the Keith Overbite Network are cutting off their noses to spite their faces. According to TigerHawk, NBC has been making noises about banning Ann Coulter from their network.

An unnamed NBC source that “We are just not interested in anyone so highly critical of President-elect Obama, right now, [i]t’s such a downer. It’s just not the time, and it’s not what our audience wants, either.”

A downer? What is is this, the 7th grade? (Though if NBC’s recent history is any indication, it is far closer to a kindergarten).

Allahpundit chimes in:

Media Matters pushed them to cancel but there was no nutroots groundswell that I’m aware of. They knew what they were getting when they booked her considering what happened the last time she was on and her tendency to refer to The One in interviews as “B. Hussein Obama.” Scheduling her put them in a spot where they’d either have to go through with it and spoil their new liberal Olber-brand or cave and be ridiculed endlessly for lefty pandering by O’Reilly and Fox. So, er, why’d they do it? And why would someone at the show give a quote that juicy to Drudge knowing what he’d do with it, given that he’s a friend of Coulter’s and dependably promotes her books whenever a new one drops? Anyone else find this strange/stupid, even by NBC’s standards?

Also, it seems rather foolish for NBC to make a stink about this, since whether people like or hate Ann, she is a ratings draw. I would assume that NBC would want to pull a better rating for Sermon on the Mount Day (formerly known as Inaguration Day) then the usual 12-15 people who watch the network for Chris Matthew’s Restless Obama Leg Syndrome and counting the number of spittles that spray from his mouth every time it is opened.

Ann’s new book was just released today and is already #9 on Amazon. Do yourself a favor and click the link above and get your copy.

Update: NBC caves…

Obama’s silence on the Israel/Hamas operation some supporters dismayed

Posted by NosferatusCoffin | January 6th, 2009

Obama supporters.
“Disciples” I call them.

They were sold a bill of “goods”. Those “goods” included Obama’s still-to-be-seen (but apparently inherent) ability to handle ANY crisis with leadership, confidence and grace.

So – where is he, on Israel and Hamas? Just a day or two ago, his “people” said “there’s only one President at a time”. Be not confused…This is code for “We’re not sure what Barack thinks on this, so don’t ask. In fact, how dare you ask! Do not bother the Obamessiah! The great and powerful Obamessiah has spoken”.

Come on folks….I thought this guy was the political “2nd coming”?
I thought he would halt the “rise of the oceans”?
I thought he would pay all debts for all Americans in need?
I thought he was the smartest man on earth?

Sucks to be proven THIS stupid, doesn’t it?
In the dictionary under “duped” there’s a picture of that 50+ percent that voted for the man.

Enjoy the next 4 years.

Obama *still* not interfering with Israel
(snip)

It’s starting to worry some people.

People like Simon Tisdall of the Guardian, who probably speaks for all those Leftists out there who contributed time and money in the hope that America’s Israel policy would change. I want to point out a specific sentence:
[quote]The Al-Jazeera satellite television station recently broadcast footage of Obama on holiday in Hawaii, wearing shorts and playing golf, juxtaposed with scenes of bloodshed and mayhem in Gaza.
